manipulation
I am often criticized for having a mind that jumps all over the place, restricting anyone from following what on earth I am talking about. So these drawings may seem a little off topic in relation to my blog, but I wanted to post them because it was while compiling the content of my blog that I was inspired to start this collection of drawings. Idealist female forms are constantly thrown in the face of us mere mortals by the media. The women I portray in my drawings, although perhaps hideous and malnourished looking to some, are unfortunately what I perceive to be attractive. Interesting. Well at least I am drawing. Since high school, I have struggled to find motivation to create any art work. Sad considering I was awarded art student of the year when I graduated haha.

Familiar scene, youtube

I found this clip while searching
for a particular clothing collection
at the London fashion week. It
made me laugh because I could
not helpthinking about the hours
I have spent trying to put together an
out fit. Time wasted of course, but
I cannot see my self sacrificing the
process anytime soon.
I couldn't help but smile when I walked into the Alice Hoy, level 1 bathrooms and saw this stuck on the mirror.
Someone has stuck these up around campus. I have seen quite a few of them, but only thought to capture these two. The notes feature inspirational messages, and while they don't really have anything to do with 'style', I think their intention is very reflective upon the supportive nature of young people today. My mum often comments on the relationships I have with my friends, as she seems to think that our generation relies a lot more upon friendship that what her generation did. Our friends are our family.

On the phone, Swanston Steet

I almost died when I saw her. She reminded me of an image of a girl who had been posted on one of my favorite blogs, similar outfit and on the phone. I wanted a photo but she was so interested in her phone call that I didn't have the heart to ask. I often catch my self clinging to my mobile, as if placing it in the bag slung across my shoulder would be to far away. I honestly cannot imagine life without my phone, despite how attractive an anti social existence sometimes seems. I think it is a love hate relationship that most of the youth generation in western culture would understand.

Bike anonymous, Gratten Street

I love these old school bikes that are becoming a popular addition to the indie scene. I was super disappointed that the owner was not around, I would have loved to have seen what he or she looked like. Having a bike like this really takes accessorizing to the next level.

I could not resist the pants. Spotted on south lawn, these two some what intoxicated young boys reminded me of 1960s hippies, and are a classic example of who you can find on south lawn on any sunny afternoon. The self painted jeans featuring a sun face on the right was what caught my attention.

Everything about this one was so calm and collected. Sitting outside the cafe animal orchestra, it was discovered that he is actually the barista. This cafe is an incredibly popular meet up point for melbourne uni students. The entire vibe could not be better described than by the word 'cool'. I personally spend a ridiculous amount of time there, I find the atmosphere really relaxing, and I suppose I enjoy people watching haha.

Same, Same but different, Carpark

I know these two girls from high school. Aesthetically opposite, but when asked if they dressed the same on purpose they both laughed and said it happens by coincidence often. I found this interesting as I often find my self dressed in similar clothing to my best friends. I believe in the theory that when you like something, or someone, you copy them. So I guess when you are so close with someone you naturally function upon the same level, basing a lot of your identity upon theirs.

Trendy, Outside the ERC

A tutor waiting to take his class. Loved his hat and coat. Hesitant at first, but I was glad I approached him, he was very enthusiastic. A 'young at heart' kind of character. Quirky, but incredibly endearing.

Caught on her way to a take an interview for a journalism class. I thought the radio equipment doubled well as a fashion accessory. Geek :)

Crush, Seven Seeds

Crush. I saw him while in seven seeds. I was to nervous to ask for a photo, but we drank the same coffee so I am sure its meant to be haha. Sevens seeds, is a very trendy coffee shop for Melbournian University student to visit. They cram you on to tiny communal tables, that you some times have to wait 20 minuets to get, where you then are given maybe 10 minuets to down a coffee (a very good one mind you), can not hear a word that is being said to you, before you are sent on your way by the glaring eyes of the yet to be seated customers. However, you still describe the experience as 'amazing'. It seems silly that we put our self through this, but I would say that if you want to be a part of the trendy cafe culture that exists in melbourne, especially amongst the youth generation, then seven seeds is the place to be!

She wears these almost every tutorial. Converse outlet, smith street. Converse Shoes are incredibly popular, but I liked the way she has chosen what is both a very practical shoe, in a style that is a little more individual.

First year, Elisabeth Murdoch. Caught her walking out of a lecture, wearing a boyfriends shirt. Oh and the country road shoulder bag. Surely everyone had, or knew some one that had one in high school. Sure they are practical, but I'm sure there exists an equally practical bag that does not put your parents back $100. The bag was always more about identity. Basically, they were 'cool'.

Keri Cold, Keri Keri Cafe

Solo at keri keri cafe, had to draw her...

Introductions

I started I like That simply to share the images of people I have seen wondering around my university. I'm not going to lie, when I first started at Melbourne University I struggled. Lets just say University was not my thing. Honestly, as shallow as I may seem to admit this, but one of the only things that motivated me to attend was the opportunity to check out some very well dressed ladies and gentlemen. Lets just say school uniform was never my thing either. I have always loved clothing. I would say I also love fashion, but maybe that's the wrong word, style may be a little more accurate at describing what attracts my eyes to a person. My respect for a person who is able to say something about them self in the way they dress is slightly unnatural, but existent all the same.

With this is mind, this year I am studying a subject that is based upon youth expression. A part of the assessment is to create an 'artefact' that is for 'youth'. I really believe that fashion and clothing has a huge influence upon youth and identity construction, so my artefact will be in support of this opinion in the form of a Melbourne University style blog.
